The book "Dovecots: With a Look at Aq’qolamali Pigeon Towers in Najafabad" by Atefeh Karbasi, assistant professor at the Faculty of Architecture and Urban Planning, Shahid Beheshti University (SBU), in collaboration with Narges Malek Kavkani and Masih Masjedi has been published recently by SBU Press in 340 pages.
The pigeon towers of Aq’qolamali (Safa) in Najafabad, Isfahan, are among the most prominent surviving pigeon tower complexes in Iran. Prior to this publication, there were no detailed maps of these towers available, making this book the first to provide architectural drawings of these structures alongside oral histories and narratives from the past. It aims to familiarize readers with the unique and sometimes sacred cultural significance of pigeon towers in Iran and their historical role in agriculture.
The book is divided into six chapters, beginning with an exploration of the cultural and literary significance of pigeons and pigeon towers. It delves into historical texts and travelogues to highlight these marvels, which have long fascinated tourists and played a vital role in Iran's agricultural system. Detailed comparisons with other pigeon towers in Iran and worldwide are also provided, emphasizing the architectural features and functions of these structures.
For those interested in Iranian cultural heritage, tourism, historical architecture, and specifically pigeon towers like those of Agha Gholaamali in Najafabad, this book offers practical insights. It is recommended for undergraduate, graduate, and PhD students conducting specialized research or design studies related to pigeon towers.
To purchase the book, students and enthusiasts can visit the sales office at SBU's Scientific Publications Center located in the Information Technology building, ground floor, or order online through the center's website.
