A memorandum of understanding (MoU) was signed between SBU and Gwangju Institute of Science and Technology (GIST) - South Korea in December 2021 with the aim of expanding educational and research interactions and exchanging students and professors in the fields of basic and engineering-technical sciences.
Among the items agreed in this memorandum are: hosting the faculty members of each university by the other university to offer courses or research collaboration, exchanging graduate students between the two universities, providing research equipment and facilities, accommodation and insurance to students by the host university, and paying special attention to the creation of joint projects.
Gwangju Institute of Science and Technology (GIST) was established in 1993. The institute includes schools of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, Materials Science and Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, life sciences, Earth Sciences and Environmental Engineering, physics and chemistry, and departments of Nanobio Materials and Electronics, and Biomedical Science and Engineering.
The institute also has two research centers focusing on advanced photonics and solar and renewable energies.
