Mahdi Ghotbi Maleki, a PhD graduate of electrical engineering (power) from Shahid Beheshti University (SBU), won the title of "praiseworthy" in the 14th IEEE Iran Section Awards Ceremony.
Mahdi Ghotbi entered the PhD program of electrical engineering – power in 2016. He has compiled his thesis on wide-area load-shedding in the face of Fault-Induced Delayed Voltage Recovery (FIDVR) under the supervision of Dr. Reza Mohammadi and Dr. Hamid Javadi.
The phenomenon of FIDVR appears in networks with high penetration coefficient of motor loads as in coolers. It is one of the challenges facing power networks. Iran's power network is also involved in this phenomenon in the hot seasons and in the southern regions.
If the network voltage stabilizes at a low level due to the dynamic nature of motor loads, the possibility of damage to the network equipment and the exit of generators and transformers from the circuit increases. This exit also leads the network to voltage collapse and nationwide blackout.
To deal with this phenomenon, an intelligent load-shedding method is presented in this thesis, which has the ability to detect the most effective load-shedding for faster voltage recovery after collecting information from the network level. The proposed method is designed in such a way that by shedding the lowest load, it can eliminate the threat of voltage collapse and wide blackout. Also, one of the other advantages of the proposed load-shedding method is its potential to be implemented in current networks with existing equipment.
It is worth mentioning that the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) is an international professional and non-profit organization whose purpose is to help advance technology in general and fields related to electrical and computer engineering in particular. The history of this institute dates back to 1884, when electricity became one of the most influential phenomena in human life. Currently, this institute has more than 400,000 members in 160 countries.
Iran Section of this institute was established more than 40 years ago in 1970. With a membership of about 2,500 people, it is among the top 10 sections of the eighth IEEE region (including Europe, West Asia and Africa) in terms of the number of members. Iran Section oversees the performance of about 30 student branches, annual national conferences, events, meetings and workshops. Also, every year, it introduces outstanding professors and students in the field of electrical engineering.
