The 42nd meeting of the SESAME Council was held on July 9-10, 2023, hosted by Spain, with the presence of representatives from the Islamic Republic of Iran.
Prof. Seyed Mahmoudreza Aghamiri, president of Shahid Beheshti University and Iran's representative in the SESAME Council, announced this news and added: “The 42nd meeting of the SESAME Council was held in Barcelona, Spain with the attendance of eight countries participating in this plan, including the Islamic Republic of Iran, Pakistan, Egypt, Palestine, Cyprus, the Zionist regime, Jordan and Turkey. Dr. Ali Khatibi and I attended this two-day meeting as representatives of the Islamic Republic of Iran.”
Stating that the meeting took place after visiting the ALBA Synchrotron in Spain, Prof. Aghamiri said: “The cooperation between the ALBA Synchrotron and the SESAME Council were emphasized.” Pointing to the issues raised in the specialized sessions of the meeting, he stated: “In different sessions of the meeting, the technical and financial issues on the expansion process of usable beam lines were discussed and it was decided that the used beams be expanded so that different countries could advance their research activities.”
Explaining the position of our country in the SESAME project, Prof. Aghamiri emphasized: “Iran is one of the influential countries in the SESAME project and has been able to take advantage of this project until today. In this meeting, various countries, including Spain expressed their willingness to expand scientific and educational cooperation with our country.”
Referring to the agreement to pay a part of Iran's debt to this project, he clarified: “In this meeting, it was decided to pay a part of Iran's membership fee in the SESAME project from the debts of Jordan to the Islamic Republic of Iran.”
It is worth noting that the SESAME project, abbreviated for Synchrotron-light for Experimental Science and Applications in the Middle East, is a research complex located 35 km from Amman, the capital of Jordan, which was launched in 2017 with the cooperation of 14 countries.
