The translation of the book “La traduction juridique: Fondement et méthode” into Persian by Dr. Danial Basanj, an assistant professor of the Faculty of Letters and Human Sciences, and Roshanak Mousavi, a master's graduate of French Translation Studies, has been published recently by SBU Press in 242 pages. The book was originally written in French by Claude Bocquet in 2008.
The wide range of text types in the field of law, on the one hand, and the difference in legal systems, on the other, are among the challenges facing the legal translator. Legal concepts differ from one language to another, and it is difficult to find adequate equivalents for legal terms. The legal reasoning underlying each of the texts to be translated may also be different, and it is important that the translator strives to understand and master the legal reasoning of his/her working languages. Therefore, the legal-linguistic challenge facing the legal translator goes beyond the micro-structures of the source and target languages (vocabularies, sentences, etc.) and encompasses the discursive macro-structures of legal texts, which is referred to in this book as "legal reasoning".
The author's approach in the book is analytical-educational. He has attempted to establish a connection between the theoretical and practical aspects of legal translation studies by relying on various examples and presenting a diverse corpus. On the other hand, the author has dealt with the challenges of the field of legal translation education by relying on an educational perspective. This educational perspective undoubtedly is one of the strengths of the book. The texts presented in the book have been selected and arranged from sources in French, German and Italian, considering the life and academic and professional activities of the author in Switzerland.
Claude Bocquet had a university degree in history, French and German literature studies, and psychoanalysis, before obtaining a PhD in law. He was a professor at the University of Geneva and the head of the Department of French Language and Translation Studies in the Faculty of Translation of the university. He considers researchers and students in the field of translation studies and translators of legal texts as the audience of his work.
