Optimization is one of the main and indispensable parts of a decision-making system in various sciences, because different optimization approaches are used in a wide range of industries, such as aerospace, chemical, nuclear, electrical, mining, mechanical, information technology, finance and e-commerce. In some subjects of science and engineering, it is difficult to get answers to questions that have many permutations and they cannot be achieved by direct methods, and it is necessary to use optimization methods. To solve optimization problems, several gradient-based methods were popular until the 1990s. But currently, a large number of complex problems are solved using directed stochastic search methods such as particle swarm and genetic algorithm optimization. Hybrid algorithms in which a combination of gradient-based methods and stochastic methods are used are also very common.
The present book defines optimization and evaluates its methods, especially smart methods (heuristic, meta-heuristic and super-heuristic), compares several meta-heuristic optimization methods in solving test functions and the travelling salesperson problem, as well as their application in physics and engineering problems.
